Why I cried at my desk today... (OR, If you only...
I read this today while eating lunch and I couldn’t stop crying. I want to love my wife, and life, like this.
Uneasy Rider
Mike DeStefano, b. 1966
Mike DeStefano was still on the rise as a comedian when he died of a heart attack at 44. He was one of the finalists on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing” and definitely stood out from the pack. He wasn’t always the funniest, but there was...

Life Lessons from a Raiders fan...
So I became a Raiders fan once we moved back to California. It wasn’t a hard decision. I wear lots of black and my wife’s Mexican. So… yeah. Raiders fan.
This season has brought with it hope and heart-ache, pride and pain. Al’s passing and Palmer’s passing have been the low and high points of a season that has light at the end of the tunnel. With a few weeks left,...

How I Failed at Fasting...
I was planning on going 10 days with just liquids.
I blocked out a little time in the morning, lunchtime, before I left the office and before I went to sleep. During this time, I just listened.
I re-read some of the simple, fundamental and rudimentary moments in the Bible. I was at a point where I could listen.
I got together with some friends who spoke some great things - challenging things -...
Soft Despotism
After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will...
'member? You 'member...
In 2008 I lost a friend that I really looked up to. His name is Tony Malama.
He had tattoos of burning skulls on his forearms. He looked like one of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse.
I had him deliver eviction papers to an unruly tenant once and the dude accepted them politely and thanked Tony for not smashing his teeth in.
But inside, he was a good dude who was in process. I met up with him...
